Texas-born singer, songwriter and guitarist Barry Bynum launched his career with a series of garage rock bands in the 1970s. His greatest work, however, has come through the spiritual tunes that he's favored since becoming a born-again Christian as a teenager and forming pioneering CCM band Liberation Suite.
After leaving Liberation Suite in the early '90s Barry and his wife Kristi moved to Northern Ireland, where he launched a solo career and led rock music worship services at Christian Fellowship Church, Belfast, which opened many new doors.
During this time he released his debut solo album, Stickin' Your Neck Out, described by Cross Rythmns magazine as "a scorching album chock full of Texas rock and blues licks" and To You, a more contemplative worship-centred album which combined live recordings and studio tracks.
Bynum and his family returned to Texas in 1999.
In the span of a career which began in the Texas Panhandle at age 13, Barry Bynum has performed with a vast range of artists on stages across Europe and America.
Larry Norman, Chuck Girard, John Lee Hooker, Virgle Johnson, Kevin Gould, Pat Travers, Glenn Kaiser, Robin Mark, Jessie Dixon, Brian Houston, Michael Cameron, Duke Special - all these and many others have benefitted from his unique guitar and vocal work on stage or in the studio.
In addition to touring and recording with Liberation Suite and as a solo act, over the last two decades Barry has also produced and engineered albums for several other artists, either in his own studio or further afield.
Barry shows no signs of slowing down - in 2021 he began the final stages of releasing his first solo project in several years, the infectious blues and garage rock inflected Out of the Shadows, available now on various platforms.
Barry Bynum has been drawn to music from earliest memory, claiming that "I could play the uke before I could ride a bike." Forming Liberation Suite in San Marcos at the age of 16, within three years the band had built a solid following in the British Isles and throughout Europe.
In interviews at the time, he noted, "I suppose in hindsight, thinking back to being just a kid in Lubbock, I can see a purpose and plan unfolding, but at the time, in the middle of things, do we really see much beyond our own limited ability to understand? I mean, c'mon, how much does a 13 year old musician really understand? I feel so grateful that God helped me through a lot of crazy stuff to lead me toward that vision I needed to see, of Jesus, a true relationship."
Barry's faith remains strong and is central to the fun and friendly nature of his concerts. He has gained a reputation for putting audiences at ease while at the same time not shying away from some of harder and darker aspects of a spiritual walk.
